A referendum among Sri Lankan Tamils and the Tamil diaspora to ascertain their requirements alone would get them a new lease of life, said DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Friday.
In a statement here, he said the report to be submitted by the UNHRC commissioner Navaneetham Pillay based on her visit to the war-torn Tamil areas and the decision to be taken by the United Nations would move things to the next stage for Sri Lankan Tamils. Recalling Ms. Pillay’s allegation that the people who met her during her visit were questioned and Sri Lanka was showing signs of heading towards authoritarianism, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Sri Lankan government had not bothered to implement the recommendations of its own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). “The attacks on Tamils during the last leg of war should be declared as war crimes,” he said.
