Karunanidhi files papers at Tiruvarur

DMK president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi filed his nomination papers from the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency here on Monday. Before filing his nomination, he went to his mother Anjugam Ammaiyar’s ‘samadhi’ at Kattur near here and paid obeisance.

Mr. Karunanidhi, who was staying at his house on the Sannadhi Street here, headed straight to his mother’s grave in the morning along with former Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran and T.R. Baalu, party district president Poondi K. Kalaivanan and others in tow.

Returning home from Kattur and taking a short break, Mr. Karunanidhi arrived at the Tiruvarur Revenue Divisional Officer office on the South Street less than a kilometre away just past noon. There Tiruvarur Returning Officer R. Muthumeenakshi was ready along with other officials. Soon, Mr. Karunanidhi read out the oath and filed the affidavit besides handing over his nomination papers to Ms. Muthumeenakshi. His candidature was proposed by Tiruvarur Municipality vice-chairman D. Senthil while the party’s former Tiruvarur Panchayat Union secretary R.P. Subramanian filed nomination papers as the covering (dummy) candidate.

According to his sworn affidavit, Mr. Karunanidhi has no automobiles, gold jewellery, investments in corporates or dues to government or financial institutions under his name.

With just Rs. 50,000 as cash in hand, Mr. Karunanidhi has affirmed that he has movable assets to the tune of Rs. 13,42,51, 536. According to his income tax return for 2014-15, he enjoyed an income of Rs. 1,21,41,930 during the year. In the last Assembly elections in 2011, he had stated that his assets were worth Rs. 44,14,93,770. His total liabilities were Rs. 2,23,53,006.
