After a gap of nearly 50 years, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday filed his nomination for an Assembly constituency located in the Cauvery delta, when he submitted papers for the Tiruvarur constituency.
[In the 1962 Assembly elections, he was elected from the Thanjavur constituency, defeating Parisutha Nadar of the Congress by a margin of about 1,930 votes ]
At about 11-30 a.m. , Mr. Karunanidhi, accompanied by his sons - Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Union Minister M.K.Alagiri – and a host of other leaders, reached the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer of Tiruvarur. Around 11-45 a.m., he submitted the papers to Tiruvarur Tashildar and Assistant Returning Officer of the constituency N. Jeyaraj. Former Union Minister T.R. Baalu and former Tiruchi Member of Parliament L. Ganesan were among those present on the occasion.
According to Mr. Karunanidhi’s affidavit, the value of movable properties owned by him was around Rs. 4.93 crore. His spouses, M.K. Dayalu Ammal and Rajathi Ammal, had movable properties of about Rs. 15.4 crore and Rs. 20.6 crore respectively.
The Chief Minister had four fixed deposits in the Kodambakkam branch of Indian Bank to the tune of nearly Rs. 4.1 crore; a FD of about Rs. 13.75 lakh in the Adyar branch of Karur Vysya Bank and another deposit of around Rs. 39.6 lakh in Karnataka Bank. Apart from a current account in the Royapettah branch of Indian Bank, he had two SB accounts in the Kodambakkam and Raja Annamalaipuram branches of the same bank. The account in the RA Puram branch was being held jointly with Ms. Rajathi Ammal.
While Mr. Karunanidhi and Ms. Rajathi Ammal did own cars, Ms. Dayalu Ammal had a Hyundai Accord car, whose value was put at about Rs. 16 lakh.
Ms. Dayalu Ammal held about 60 lakh shares in Kalaignar TV, the worth of which was about Rs. 6 crore. She owned old gold jewellery of about 716 grams (worth Rs. 10.96 lakh) and precious stones of 2.8 carrat (worth Rs. 1.61 lakh)
Ms. Rajathi Ammal had possessed 25 lakh shares of about Rs. 2.5 crore in the Westgate Logistic firm, apart from investing about Rs. 2.56 crore in her enterprises. She owned old gold jewellery of 640 grams (worth about Rs. 9.85 lakh).
Mr. Karunanidhi had no immovable assets. Ms. Dayalu Ammal owned a residential house in A.M.S. Nagar of Vadakkusenthi Taluk in Tiruvarur district and Ms. Rajathi Ammal, a house on First Main Road, CIT Colony, Chennai. The present market value of the Tiruvarur property was estimated at Rs. 5.51 lakh while that of the CIT colony house at Rs. 3.14 crore.
