DMK president M. Karunanidhi, who showed little interest in a third front earlier, on Thursday said he would welcome any front that would serve the country’s interest.
A year ago, Mr. Karunanidhi had said it was unfair to ask him about a third front and any question on the subject should be addressed to leaders trying to forge such a grouping.
When asked about the convention against communalism organised by the Left parties on October 30 in Delhi, which is also likely to be a platform for the future third front partners, Mr. Karunanidhi said he had not received any invitation for the meeting. “The executive and general council meeting of our party will decide,” he said to a question whether he would attend the meeting, if invited.
Mr. Karunanidhi welcomed the State Assembly resolution urging India to stay away from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and said Sri Lankan Tamils would benefit a lot if similar resolutions were passed across the country. He said he had not yet decided about campaigning in the by-election to the Yercaud Assembly constituency.
