Expressing happiness over the passing of Lokpal Bill in Parliament, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday called for establishing Lok Ayukta in States.
In a statement, he said the DMK had in 1973 introduced an anti-corruption law bringing those in public life, including the Chief Minister, Ministers, MLAs, Mayor and others under its purview. However, the law was withdrawn by the subsequent regime in 1977.
Takes a dig at CPI (M)
Referring to the announcement of Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader G. Ramakrishnan that the party along with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was trying to unite secular parties at the national level, Mr. Karunanidhi wondered whether the CPI (M) was party to AIADMK’s stand on the Sethusamudram Project.
On the allegation of corruption levelled by Mr. Ramakrishnan against the DMK, he said the case was under trial. Listing out a few corruption cases involving the AIADMK, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Siva Subramanian Commission of enquiry constituted to probe into allegations of encroachment of Dalit lands in Siruthavur was based on a petition given by the CPI (M).
