A husky voice, a yellow shawl and thick black spectacles have for long provided DMK leader M. Karunanidhi a distinct identity in Tamil Nadu politics. On Saturday, after 46 years, he changed his spectacles on the doctor's recommendation.

The new frame is an imported one and is lighter compared to the ones he has been using all these years.

40-day search

“His [Karunanidhi’s] son M.K. Tamizharasu requested me to find a new frame. It took almost 40 days to obtain one that suits him perfectly. The German frame is feather-weight,” said Seshan Jayaraman, CEO of Chennai-based Vijaya Opticals, who sourced it.

The old frame was heavy and causing pressure on Mr. Karunanidhi’s temples.

“The doctors treating him advised him to change his frames. Despite our best efforts, we were not able to get a suitable one from within the country. Finally, my friend got it from abroad,” said Mr. Jayaraman.
