There has been “some delay” in the State government's response to the havoc caused by cyclone ‘Thane' and reaching relief to people, said M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, here on Thursday.
The government should have reacted swiftly, he told reporters after inspecting the cyclone-affected paddy crop in Kanur village of Tiruvarur district and Kurumanankudy and Neelakudi villages of Nagapattinam district.
Farmers and labourers showed the affected paddy crop to Mr. Karunanidhi.
Asked whether he would apprise the Centre of the flood damage, Mr. Karunanidhi said there was no need for that.

About his assessment of the damage, he said that though the crop damage was not as portrayed, paddy crop on a few acres had been damaged. Relief should be provided to the affected farmers.
In Cuddalore district, which he visited on Wednesday, the livelihood of people had been affected due to the cyclone in many places. The government should take steps to provide them livelihood.
He would discuss with his party cadre at the grassroots level on the damage and ask them to help the needy in the cyclone-hit areas.
