‘Karnataka bound by Cauvery Tribunal order’

August 19, 2016 02:18 am | Updated 02:18 am IST - SIVAGANGA:

Union Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation D. V. Sadananda Gowda on Thursday said Karnataka was bound to give water to Tamil Nadu as per the order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

In a brief chat with reporters after paying homage to freedom fighters Marudhu Brothers at Tirupattur, he said, “Karnataka is bound to give water to Tamil Nadu as per the water tribunal’s order and we are no way hampering it. We are bound by the order.”

Defending the Mekedatu project, Mr. Gowda said the project would certainly not diminish the water flow to Tamil Nadu. The project was intended to generate power and meet a small quantity of drinking water need of Bengaluru, he said.

On the contentious jallikattu issue, Mr. Gowda said the Centre had made its stand very clear, not only in the public domain but also before the court. Time and again there were requests from Tamil Nadu to lift the ban on jallikattu and the views of the people of the State would be respected by the Centre.
