In a sign of his intent to break with the Congress and launch a party, the estranged Congress leader, P. Kannan, took part in a protest here on Thursday, with his supporters holding a flag different from the Congress’s.

The flag had Mr. Kannan’s photo imprinted on the white bar in the middle.

Two days ago, Pradesh Congress Committee president A.V. Subramanian warned party members not to take part in the agitation organised by Mr. Kannan, a Rajya Sabha member, who has been at loggerheads with leaders, including the former Union Minister, V. Narayanasamy.

Speaking at the venue, Mr. Kannan wanted to know whether the Congress supported the “misdeeds” of the ruling AINRC indirectly by asking the workers not to take part in the protest.
