Kanimozhi promises to make public Sagayam committee report

May 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - THANJAVUR:

The findings of the Sagayam Committee that probed the granite scam will be made public and action will be taken based on the recommendations of the report if the DMK is returned to power, Kanimozhi, DMK MP and daughter of party chief Karunanidhi, said here on Sunday.

Ms. Kanimozhi told presspersons that the party’s election manifesto had properly reached the masses who had shown increasing acceptance of the DMK.

Promises on prohibition, waiver of education loan, agricultural credit waiver and separate budget for agriculture have made the people turn towards the DMK, she said.

Asked on criticism of the DMK on prohibition by its political opponents, Ms. Kanimozhi replied that no person has the right to say who must speak up for prohibition or who must not.

The DMK was not in a position to follow anybody on the prohibition front. In the early part of the previous DMK regime, more than 1,300 liquor retail outlets were closed and vending time was reduced.

The party’s government had commenced the efforts towards prohibition then itself, Ms. Kanimozhi said.

Ms. Kanimozhi said a leader or their immediate family members were directly involved in the distilleries business.

The DMK would stand by its election manifesto and implement all the promises made in the document.

Party president M. Karunanidhi has never backed out from turning into reality anything that he had promised, she added.

Ms. Kanimozhi said the DMK consistently tried to get the Cauvery Tribunal award gazetted.

The party’s government continuously engaged the neighbouring states in times of distress and arranged for supply of water for irrigation. But the AIADMK regime had never involved other States in talks to resolve the issue.

On the Sagayam Committee report, Ms. Kanimozhi said if the DMK was returned to power the probe report would be made public and action would be taken against errant individuals or bodies. “We will face the truth,” she said.

Incidentally, it was the AIADMK that initially demurred in launching a probe and acted on that only after the courts gave a direction to that effect.
