Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan on Monday took the initiative of inviting political party leaders for an all-party meeting on Cauvery, to be convened by farmers’ organisations in Chennai on May 19. The meeting would be presided over by veteran Communist leader R. Nallakannu.
Mr. Haasan called on DMK working president M.K. Stalin at the Anna Arivalayam to urge him to participate in the meeting. The actor-politician said he had also extended an invitation to a host of leaders, including BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan, TMC leader G.K. Vasan, AMMK founder T.T.V. Dhinakaran and actor Rajinikanth to participate in the meeting.
Mr. Stalin said he would take a decision after consulting the political parties allied to the DMK. “Nine political parties under the leadership of the DMK have been conducting struggles [to resolve this issue]. We had decided to have a meeting on May 15, but postponed it to May 17, since the Cauvery water sharing issue will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on May 15,” the DMK leader said.
