A Kali icon was found in a burial ground here in Mullainagar in Karaikal on Tuesday. The 1.5-ft high Kali icon, weighing about 1.8 kg was found buried in a graveyard.

It was found when the ground was being excavated for a burial here on Tuesday night. Speaking to The Hindu on condition of anonymity, a revenue official, who is also an iconography enthusiast, said he suspected that it could have been made recently, presumably for a special purpose.

According to him, this form of Kali is usually not worshipped at home or even in temples. It could have been used for some dark form of worship and buried in a graveyard.

However, the icon was handed over to the police and was later given to the custody of the revenue authorities here.
