District Crime Branch police arrested an employee of Kodaikanal sub-treasury office and his wife at Natham near here on Monday in connection with financial malpractice to the tune of ₹1.5 crore.

The arrested were junior assistant Arun Kumar and his wife Kanimozhi. The police arrested the couple during a surprise raid at Natham.

The police said Arun Kumar and additional sub-treasury officer Vijayakumar had reportedly diverted a huge amount from the drought relief fund to the accounts of 11 persons.

The police arrested Kanimozhi as Arun Kumar had bought immovable properties in her name.

The new treasury officer, Venkatesh, detected the malpractice after verifying records and accounts, and submitted a report to higher authorities, and filed a complaint with the police on Saturday.

Based on his report, Vijayakumar and Arun Kumar were suspended. Vijayakumar is absconding.
