The Constitution of India and various laws enacted in the country were aimed at protecting women’s rights but lack of awareness among women about their rights and judicial remedies made them silent victims of atrocities, according to Supreme Court Judge S.J. Mukhopadhaya.
Crime against women can be eradicated only if there is social awakening and change in the attitude of masses, Justice Mukhopadhaya said, delivering the 15th endowment lecture of the S. Viswanathan and B.R. Dolia Lecture Endowment Trust here on Thursday. Citing the National Crime Records Bureau statistics for 2011, he said that between 1953 and 2011, the number of rapes had gone up by about 875 per cent.
