Principal District and Sessions Judge Alamelu Natarajan on Thursday allowed the petition filed by Special Public Prosecutor appointed by the State Government in Dalit youth Shankar murder case, U. Sankaranarayanan, to recall key witnesses for identifying the accused from crime scene video footage.

The Judge asked the Special Public Prosecutor to re-examine the Prosecution Witnesses No: 2 and 3, auto driver Venugopal and push cart vendor Ramasamy, respectively, on November 30 with respect to the video footages since the two were there on the spot when Shankar and his wife Kausalya were attacked by a gang at Udumalpet in March.

The said two witnesses were once examined by the Prosecution in a general context on an earlier occasion.

Mr. Sankaranarayanan stated that he asked for the recalling of the said two witnesses, amid the vehement opposition raised by the defense lawyers, as the identification of the accused from the video footages was thought to be essential to further strengthen the prosecution.
