The rural police have picked up five persons for questioning for their alleged involvement in a robbery at a house in Poosaripatti here on March 5.

Sources said that they could be members of the gang that robbed 350 sovereign gold jewellery and Rs. 4.5 lakh in cash after they tied the couple Ponnurangam and his wife Kannamal, last Thursday afternoon.

Gold bar

Inquiries revealed that the gang had converted the jewellery into gold bar and is in the process of selling it.

Murder cases

One of the gang members is the mastermind behind the robbery incident as he is an accused in many murder cases.

The five-member gang could have hatched the plan at Salem Central Prison when they were lodged for various offences.

They have studied the area well and committed the crime, sources said.

Breakthrough

A special team of the rural police is in the process of recovering the gold and the cash and is nearing it.

A breakthrough is expected in two days, the source said.
