Jeppiar’s bail plea adjourned

Co-trustee of the Jeppiar Remibai Educational Trust, Jeppiar, has filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking bail in the case relating to the death of nine migrant workers after a wall under construction collapsed at the Jeppiar Institute of Technologya at Kunnam in Kancheepuram district on August 6.

Justice G.M. Akbar Ali, before whom the matter came up, directed the prosecution to get instructions. He adjourned the matter by a week.

Mr. Jeppiar stated that he was arrested on August 9 in connection with the incident. A case has been registered by the Sunkuvarchatram Police Station for offences under sections 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 304 (ii) (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (Attempt to commit culpable homicide) IPC for causing the death of nine workers and injuries to three. The management of the college was solely vested with the managing trustee.

He was not concerned with the day-to-day affairs of the institution.

Two persons were awarded the contract for constructing a gallery around the college playground. As per the contract, the management would not be held responsible for any untoward happenings in the course of the execution of the contract. Mr. Jeppiar said that the investigation had almost been completed.

He was suffering from a serious ailment and his health condition was deteriorating for want of proper treatment since the day of arrest.

Seeking bail, the petitioner said that he would abide by any condition that may be stipulated by the court.
