Jayalalithaa slams Railway announcement

June 06, 2012 02:33 am | Updated July 12, 2016 12:17 am IST - CHENNAI:

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday condemned the Railway's announcement increasing luggage and parcel rates by a minimum of 25 per cent and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the same.

In a statement the Chief Minister said at a time when the people were suffering due to steep increase in the petrol price, the new announcement of the Railways only added insult to the injury.

The hike would affect the poor who carried their luggage in trains and also the small traders who booked parcels through railway service.

Apart from this, tyres, newspapers, magazines, medicines, cereals and flour were also transported by trains, she said, and called for the immediate rollback.
