Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday requested her Andhra Pradesh counterpart, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, to immediately release water from the Kandaleru reservoir, so as to realise at least 1,000 cusecs at the Tamil Nadu border.

This is to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennai up to October this year.

In her letter to Mr. Reddy, she said the combined water storage in the Chennai water supply reservoirs was about 6 tmcft, against the full capacity of 11 tmcft. The present storage would not be adequate to meet the drinking water supply needs up to October this year. During 2010-11, only 4.6 tmcft was received as against the annual entitlement of 12 tmcft.

“I believe that the water storage position in all the reservoirs of the Krishna Water Supply project is comfortable and it may not be difficult for the Government of Andhra Pradesh to release water from the Kandaleru reservoir to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennai city,” Ms. Jayalalithaa said.
