AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday demanded a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the seizure of fake and expired drugs in the State.

In a press release, Ms. Jayalalithaa said there were reasons to believe that there was involvement of people from other States in the case.

There were reports that fake and expired drugs had been recovered from Central government hospitals both in Puducherry and Chennai. Many private drug companies and dispensaries had also been reportedly manufacturing certain drugs without due authorisation or adequate safeguards, she said.

She expressed doubts as to whether the State government could prosecute the case thoroughly through the CB-CID, to whom the case had been entrusted.

To bring the culprits to book, she said a probe by the CBI should be ordered immediately.

In this connection, a protest demonstration would be held by the North Chennai unit of the party in Chennai on Tuesday, she said.
