The Central Government has constituted a committee to go into the 'compounding applications' filed by the AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa and her close friend Sasikala in the cases related to their alleged non-filing of Income Tax returns for some years way back in the early 1990s'.

The 'compounding applications', preferred by Ms. Jayalalithaa and her friend, is expected to pave way for an amicable settlement of the issue, which has been hanging fire for years now.

The Centre's decision was conveyed by K. Ramasamy, special public prosecutor for Income Tax (I-T) cases, when the cases against the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her associate came up before Mr. Dhakshinamoorthy, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Economic Offences-I, in Chennai on Thursday rpt Thursday.

The defense counsel sought adjournment of the case as the 'compounding application' was pending before the I-T department. Mr. Ramasamy also informed the Court that the Centre-appointed committee was scheduled to meet today.

Hence, a passing over of the matter was sought, after which the Court posted it for 3-30 p.m. today.
