Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday urged the Union government to withdraw petrol price hike immediately.

In a statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said instead of taking any measure to control the rupee depreciation, the Union government was hiking the price of petrol and diesel twice in month.

Condemning the Central government for the price hike, she also called it as anti-people.

She said “In the interest of people, the government should change its policy to determine the petrol price in the country and explore oil and gas fields.”

Referring to a statement of Union Petroleum Minister M. Veerappa Moily that a lobby threatened him not to reduce the crude oil import, she said the reported threat would endanger the security of the nation.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko also called upon the Union government to withdraw the hike.
