Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday called for framing laws that would facilitate swift administration of justice in cases of rape.
Describing as “most shocking” the gang rape of 23-year-old girl in New Delhi 10 days ago, Ms. Jayalalithaa, on her return from Ahmedabad after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister, told reporters that “there is no doubt that deterrent laws need to be put in place and the period of investigation and trial has to be shortened so that justice is meted out swiftly.”
She was replying to a question on the incident of gang rape.
To another question on incidents of rape in some parts of the State, the Chief Minister replied that the police were acting immediately on receipt of complaints. Ms. Jayalalithaa would leave for New Delhi on Thursday to attend the National Development Council’s meeting.
