The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, E. V. K. S. Elangovan, on Friday accused Chief Minister Jayalalithaa of acting against the interests of minorities and inciting religious hatred to divide people, who were living in amity.
Addressing a poll campaign at Eral near here, in support of Rani Venkatesan, Congress candidate for Srivaikuntam, he said that the State needed a Chief Minister who would meet people and address their grievances.
Coming down heavily on Ms. Jayalalithaa, he said that she did not meet the flood victims in Chennai last year. Liquor had made many women widows and even young ones had taken to the habit of drinking in the State. Mr. Elangovan alleged that many industrial units had closed down in the last five years and there were charges of corruption against Ministers. The personal assistant to Tourism Minister S.P. Shanmuganathan, the candidate for Srivaikuntam, was arrested on a cheating charge in March, the Congress leader said.
