Jallikattu Peravai plans stir

January 04, 2015 09:31 am | Updated April 01, 2016 07:46 pm IST - MADURAI:

Members of the Jallikattu Peravai will stage a protest here on January 7, urging the Centre and the State government to appeal against the Supreme Court’s ban on jallikattu. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, P. Rajasekaran, peravai president, said that the Centre and the State should re-think the ban on the bull taming sport, an integral part of the Tamil culture. “The sport is held annually in 175 villages across 17 districts. The event is held as a part of the Pongal festivities and is an irreplaceable part of temple festivals. That is why the ban has affected the sentiments of people,” he said.

Mr Rajesakar questioned the need for a ban when the ‘Jallikattu’ was being conducted by adhering to the stringent norms for the past seven years.
