The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, hearing a plea seeking permission to conduct, manju virattu / jallikattu in Tiruchi, directed the Collector to consider it.

A division bench of Justices D. Krishnakumar and R. Suresh Kumar directed the petitioner to submit a fresh representation seeking permission for manju virattu / jallikattu to the Collector. The petition was subsequently disposed of.

The petitioner, Suresh, of Tiruchi, sought permission for conducting manju virattu at Manaparai.

Competent authority

Special Government Pleader A.K. Baskarapandian pointed out that while the Collector was the competent authority to decide on giving permission, a representation was submitted to the Inspector of the Manaparai police station.

Unless a representation was made to the right authority, the plea could not be considered, he said.
