In the wake of serial rapist Jaishankar (38) escaping from the Bangalore Central Prison on Sunday, the Salem district police have launched an elaborate surveillance of Kanniyampatti, the village he hails from.
Salem Rural Superintendent of Police R. Sakthivel said Jaishankar last spoke to his family members over phone after he escaped from the police on March 18, 2011. Sensing a possibility that he might visit his family, the village and his house had been put on surveillance, he said.
Two police teams were keeping a watch on the house and the movements of his family members. Vehicle checks were also being done. The official said Jaishankar had worked as a truck driver and cleaner.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Salem Range, Sanjay Kumar said notices bearing his photograph have been circulated among all police stations in Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts.
“The notices are displayed at bus stands, hospitals and places where people gather in large numbers, with contact numbers of the local police for the people to inform them of his movement”, he said.
“His photograph was circulated among all the police personnel in the range during the roll call. All vehicles crossing check posts on the Karnataka- Tamil Nadu border are thoroughly checked,” the DIG said.
