Hundreds of Jain community members took out a peace rally in the city on Thursday to express their disapproval of a recent verdict of Rajasthan High Court equating ‘Santhara’, a centuries-old religious belief of attaining ‘Moksha’ through fasting, with suicide.

The rally was taken out from the Jain Temple and passed via Manikoondu, RKV Road, and Periyar Nagar.

The rally was carried out as part of such protests taking place nationwide.

According to a member of Jain community here, the businesses were closed for a day.

Explaining that ‘Santhara’ is undertaken with the permission and approval of family members, he said the community will go for appeal against the High Court Judgment.
