Jail term for bid to rape minor girl

Tuticorin Fast Track Mahila Court Judge J. Flora on Tuesday sentenced a 47-year-old man to undergo five-year rigorous imprisonment for attempting to rape a minor girl.

According to prosecution, S. Muthuraj, a casual worker of Vellaram, was found guilty of attempting to rape a seven-year-old schoolgirl on December 29, 2009. The victim is the neighbour of the accused, who lured her to his house on the pretext of offering some eatables. Ottapidaram police had filed a case. The accused was punished under Sections 376 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code. A fine of Rs. 3,000 was also imposed on him.
