The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a constituent of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), has urged the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M. Karunanidhi, to reconsider his party’s decision to quit the UPA government and the alliance.

E. Ahamed, National president of IUML and Minister of State for External Affairs, in a statement issued in New Delhi on Tuesday, a copy of which was made available here, also urged the DMK chief to continue his support for strengthening the “secular and democratic fabric of the country and a plural society.”

Referring to Mr. Karunanidhi’s “deepest sympathies with the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils”, he said the IUML fully appreciated and supported his stand. However, he made it clear that it was an “undisputed fact that the Government of India has also taken a number of measures for the welfare and rehabilitation of Sri Lankan Tamils especially those internally displaced.” Mr. Ahamed said the Prime Minister and his government also supported, as far as possible, Mr. Karunanidhi’s views while dealing with the Government of Sri Lanka and at various international forums.

He brought to the notice of the DMK chief that IUML’s National Council had already taken a decision that secular and democratic parties should stand together behind the UPA.
