A plea has been made by activists to rectify the mistakes in the spelling of Villupuram, Mailam and three other villages in the district.

K. Sampathkumar of Tindivanam taluk has sent a representation to the authorities to rectify the spelling mistakes in both Tamil and English languages.

Villupuram district was carved out from Arcot Zilla in 1980 and named South Arcot district. Again, the district was called Ramasami Padayatchiyar district between 1989 and 1993. The present Villupuram district was created on September 30, 1993 and the name change was effected in all government records.

Since then, activists say, Villupuram has been wrongly spelt in English. It should be Viluppuram and not Villupuram as it is seen everywhere. The activists have sent several representations to the authorities to rectify the mistake, but in vain. Mr.Sampathkumar says the names should be Viluppuram, Mayilam, Veedur Dam, Ezhaay and Chithani instead of the present ones. The names which are spelt wrongly in records in both Tamil and English create unnecessary confusion among residents and revenue authorities.

The local body at Mayilam has already adopted a resolution to correct the spelling, Mr. Sampathkumar says, adding that the authorities should immediately rectify the mistakes in the gazette.
