Island Express derails; 14 hurt

Fourteen passengers were injured as the Bengaluru-Kanyakumari Island Express bound for Bengaluru derailed near the Vettapattu railway bridge in Natrampalli, nearly 90 kilometres from Vellore, during the early hours of Friday. The injured included three women and two children, The train was plying between Somanaickanpatti and Pachur stations when 15 of its 22 coaches derailed at about 4.08 a.m.

According to officials, all the injured were travelling in four coaches – S5, S6, S7 and S8 – which had toppled. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services, Natrampalli, eight 108 ambulances and a medical team from the Government Hospital at Natrampalli rushed to the spot and rescued several passengers.
