Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali has called on the Islamic scholars to explain the practice of the triple “talaq.”

Speaking at the 76{+t}{+h} Meelad-un-Nabi celebration lectures in Chennai on Sunday, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali said the Holy Quran was the highest law for Muslims and should be strictly followed by believers without doubt.

However, the common misconception that a Muslim man could divorce his wife by simply saying “talaq” thrice at one go was not in line with the Quran.

Mere pronouncement of intention to divorce is not enough, he said.

It must be understood that according to the Quran, the pronouncement of even the first “talaq” will not have any effect if it is not preceded by efforts at reconciliation by the parties themselves, and the appointment of two arbitrators from each side to unite the couple, he added.
