R.V. Varun Kumar, an Indian Police Service officer, on Monday surrendered before a metropolitan magistrate court at Saidapet on Monday in connection with a case of dowry and woman harassment registered against him.

He was remanded in judicial custody till May 12.

According to the complainant, G. Priyadarshini of Valasaravakkam, they had been friends since 2007, and Varun Kumar had promised to marry her.

However, after being selected for the IPS in 2011, he changed his mind and refused to marry her. He and his parents demanded a dowry of two kg gold, Rs. 50 lakh in cash and a luxury car.

‘No remedy’ She also alleged that when she could not meet the demands, the marriage was called off. She further alleged that Varun Kumar had told her “you have no other remedy — either give dowry or commit suicide. You are giving dowry for the post.”

On a complaint from her in 2012, the Central Crime Branch Police registered the case against the IPS officer for the offences under Sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 417 (punishment for cheating), 420 (cheating), 506(i) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, 1998, and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.

On February 14, the Supreme Court cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to him by the Madras High Court and directed him to surrender before the trial court.

On surrendering before XI Metropolitan Magistrate R.Shanthi, Varunkumar filed a petition for advancing hearing of his bail plea, but the court rejected his plea. As the police sought one-week custodial interrogation, the court directed the authorities to produce Varunkumar on Tuesday.
