Principal District Judge S. Ananthi on Thursday inspected the work to clear ‘seemai karuvelam’ trees on a private land at Old Katpadi.

On February 10, the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court ordered removal of the invasive tree species across the State in 15 days and submit a report. It had extended its order to 13 districts under its jurisdiction to all districts in Tamil Nadu.

With Vellore district officials beginning works to uproot ‘seemai karuvelam’ trees from government and private lands, the judge inspected the implementation of the court order. She visited a private land at Old Katpadi where work to remove the trees were going on.

According to an official, 169 hectares of revenue patta land and 156 hectares of revenue poramboke land have been identified for the work in 87 revenue villages in Katpadi taluk. “About 37 per cent of the work has been completed in the taluk,” he said.

“The Principal District Judge, during the inspection, inquired on the percentage of work completed and how much time will be taken to complete the remaining work,” he added.

Chief Judicial Magistrate M. Dakshinamoorthy, District Revenue Officer K. Manivannan, District Legal Services Authority’s secretary V. Damodaran and Katpadi tahsildar D. Jagadeeswaran were present.
