‘Introduce vocational subjects in all schools’

January 22, 2018 12:54 am | Updated 12:54 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Kazhagam has asked for vocational subjects to be introduced in all 2,400 higher secondary schools in the State.

“At present, only 1,605 of the 2,400 higher secondary schools offer vocational subjects for the students. As a part of the curriculum revamp for State board schools, the vocational subjects syllabus too has been revamped and we hope that this is introduced in all the higher secondary schools,” said S.N. Janardhanan, State general secretary.

At the State general body meeting on Sunday, office-bearers of the association resolved to hold a demonstration ahead of the Assembly session to draw attention to their concerns about their pay scale.

“As vocational teachers fall in the non-promotion category, teachers have gone without promotions for the last 30 odd years. We have asked that the State government either to give us promotion or hike our pay as a part of the non promotion category,” said Mr. Janardhanan. The association further demanded that nearly 600 vacant posts for vocational teachers be filled up.
