Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) S. George said on Wednesday that those who misguided vulnerable groups and instigated violence around Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) site would have to face consequences.
However, the police would not act against women and children who were part of the group agitating against nuclear power.
During an informal chat with reporters after visiting the coast between Idinthakarai and KKNPP site where the police–protesters clash took place on Monday, Mr. George said the police were keen on taking action only against organisers of the anti-KKNPP agitation.
They motivated the innocent villagers to be a part of the protest and instigated violence. Video footage captured by news channels during the clash would prove the police claim that they did not impose the confrontation on protesters, he claimed.
He denied the charge that the police indulged in violence, attacked the public and damaged their properties. “We, in fact, exercised tremendous restraint that day. The Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Rajesh Das, sustained injuries and the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, V. Varadaraju, suffered a bleeding injury on his leg. The police never retaliated vehemently and none of the children positioned by the protesters in the front row was injured,” Mr. George said.
“No need for reinforcement”
Hinting at that the police would continue their efforts to secure the brains behind the violence without affecting the law and order in the region, Mr. George said the police strength now deployed around Kudankulam was enough and there was no need for reinforcement.
