Measures have been taken to send the parents of the child for counselling and to take action against them
A 45-day-old infant, who was sold for Rs. 10,000, was rescued by Collector Darez Ahamed and handed over to the child welfare committee in the district on Tuesday.
The girl baby was born to Govindhan (45) and Muthulakshmi of Karambiyam village near Thunnam in the district.
The baby was born in the Ariyalur Government Hospital. The couple already has five girls and two boys. Based on a complaint to the Collector that the couple sold the child with the help of relatives, due to financial constraints, K. Pechiammal, district social welfare officer, and M. Aravind, health insurance officer, travelled to the spot and enquired about the alleged incident. They rescued the infant from a couple, Poomalai and Kamala, near Aathur Road, who had purchased the infant.
Measures have been taken to send the parents of the child for counselling and to take action against them for committing the illegal act. Speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Ahamed said such incidents could be prevented only if people report the issue to the government officials.
