Education is the basic requirement for a person to make himself economically and socially useful to the society, said Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

He was participating at the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Thiyagi Subramaniya Siva Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Paupparapatti , near Dharmapuri on Saturday.

“The nation requires lakhs of young men and women who can contribute in various fields – be it technology, medicine, armed forces or teaching profession. India is fast emerging as one of the leaders of the international community. It has all the resources to become the jagadguru of the world. For that to happen, it is necessary that the country is strong, economically prosperous, culturally vibrant and socially united,” he said.

Recalling the pivotal role played by freedom fighter Subramaniya Siva, after whom the school has been named, Mr. Purohit said that his name evokes memories of courage and sacrifice displayed by the freedom fighters of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Popularity

Subramaniya Siva’s reputation and popularity with the masses made him a close confidante of several leaders of the freedom movement at the national level. It was legendary Chittaranjan Das, famous jurist and mentor of of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, who laid the foundation stone for the ashram set up by Subramaniya Siva in Paupparapatti village, the Governor noted.

K.P. Anbalagan, Minister for Higher Education; P. Balakrishna Reddy, Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare; K. Vivekanandan, District Collector; R. Elangovan, Director of School Education; and M. Ramasamy, Chief Educational Officer, offered felicitations at the celebration of the school.
