Class XII students in Vellore have bettered their performance from last year, but the district ended up in the last position in the overall State standings.
The district’s pass percentage increased marginally from 81.3 per cent in 2015 to 83.13 per cent now. But this was not enough to secure a better ranking for the district. Last year, Vellore was placed 31st in the State ranking table.
Of the total of 42,251 students (19,875 boys and 22,576 girls) who appeared for the exam, 35,288 students (15,063 boys and 20,225 girls) have passed. Girls performed better than boys by securing 89.59 pass percentage, while boys recorded 75.79 per cent.
Officials said this was mainly due to poor performance by boys studying in government schools, and low pass percentage in subjects such as Commerce, History, Mathematics and Accountancy.
R. Bhoopathy, Chief Educational Officer, Vellore, said, “There has been a marginal increase of close to two per cent this year. Yet, the district is in the last place in the State (32nd position).”
Of the 325 schools, 178 were government, municipal, Adi Dravidar Welfare, forest and social welfare department schools. Only 66.14 per cent boys studying in these 178 schools passed the exam, while the pass percent of girls accounted for 86.25 per cent.
“The performance of the boys of government schools has brought down the overall pass percentage of the district. They are way behind the district’s average too,” he added. Analysis of the results also showed that subject-wise performance also led to less pass percentage.
In many of the subjects, the pass percentage is above 90 per cent. This included Language, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Statistics, Computer Science, Geography, Microbiology and Communicative English, he said.
But the pass percentage was low in subjects such as Mathematics (86.18), History (79.57), Commerce (78.84) and Accountancy (83.85).
District toppers
Though girls recorded a higher pass percentage than boys, it was a boy who bagged the top rank in the district. V.P. Sanjaya Bharathi of Sunbeam Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Katpadi secured 1,188 marks. There were three second rank holders with 1,181 marks – J. Abinaya of St. Charles Matric HSS, Tirupattur, V. Kirthika and S. Manisha of Sunbeam Matric HSS.
Two students stood third with 1,179 marks – M. Pavithra of Seventh Day Adventist MHSS and S. Monisha of Lakshmi Garden MHSS.
In government schools
Among government schools, N. Nandhini of Government Girls HSS, Gajalnaickenpatti and M. Anandhi of GGHSS, Thiruvalam, came first with 1,157 marks. B. Soniya of GGHSS, Gajalnaickenpatti and M. Mohanavel of Government Boys HSS, Gajalnaickenpatti secured the second rank with 1,154 marks. D. Prema of GGHSS, Arcot stood third with 1,149 marks.
Cent per cent
A total of 45 schools, including two government schools – Government Girls HSS, Natrampalli and Government HSS, Kasinayyakkanpatti - achieved cent per cent results.
