The income tax cases against Chief Minister Jayalalitha and her associate Sasikala came up before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Economic Offences I, on Thursday. Defence sought adjournment by two weeks stating that the Director General of Income Tax has said that “necessary information is being gathered in order to process compounding applications. This would take some time. The proposals are under consideration.”

K.Ramaswamy, the special PP for income tax filed a petition stating that since processing of compounding application may take a longer time, the court may continue the proceedings. This was strongly objected by defence counsel who said that when compounding applications are pending criminal proceedings cannot be conducted. There is a bar to carry out both simultaneously. The judge adjourned the case to Thursday noon.
