The Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles has requested the State Government to consider inclusion of electric two-wheelers under Amma scheme.

Members of various units manufacturing different brands of electric two-wheelers attended the function. Electric vehicles help users in many ways.

Benefits

They don’t incur fuel cost, there is no need for a driving licence, the maintenance cost is much lower, and it is easy to handle, they said.

The society represents 16 leading auto-manufacturers and ancillary companies.

Mr. Sohinder Gill, corporate director of the society said that they had already submitted a letter to the government for including the vehicle under the Amma scheme for working women.

The money saved on petrol, and maintenance will help them recover the entire cost of the vehicle in just two years, he added.

The use of electric vehicle reduces the Co2 emission by 1 tonne in its lifespan compared to petrol vehicle.

Members of the society said that electric scooters can easily be charged at houses itself.

The power consumption would be about 1.5 units for a full recharge that gives around 70 km.

Including the vehicle under the Amma scheme will help 1,00,00 women, said Hemalatha Annamalai, southern chapter chief of the society.

The Tamil Nadu Government had offered battery operated three-wheeler to the differently abled from 2010 to 2012. The scheme was discontinued in 2013.

Several representations were made to the State Commission for the Differently Abled for its revival, in vain.

The government should ensure that 50% of the vehicles given to persons with disability, especially women, must be electric, she added.

Under the NEMMP scheme of the Union Government, electric vehicles were entitled for a subsidy ranging from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 22,000, she said.
