The District Crime Branch on Saturday arrested a woman in connection with the kidney racket, taking the total number of arrested in the case to nine.

A nephrologist from Salem, six touts and a man who offered to sell one of his kidneys were arrested earlier.

On the latest arrest, police sources said V. Velumani (34) of Pallipalayam in Erode district had sold her kidney to Aiyar, whose kidneys had failed. But, the kidney did not match and he died.

Aiyar’s son A. Kathavarayan of Pennagaram lodged a complaint recently with the crime branch that N.S. Ayyavu, a tout arrested in the racket, had not returned the money given for a kidney for his father. The probe into the complaint led the police to Velumani.
