DMDK founder Vijayakant on Friday appealed to the people to ignore both the AIADMK and the DMK, which he said had ruined the State and stalled its development.

He was speaking at a demonstration here against the power tariff increase.

“I have come to politics to serve the people. I have the will to fight those who have foisted cases on me. I will not be cowed down by such threats,” he said. “I will not remain a mute spectator to corruption. I cannot be silenced.”

Alleging that the government, under O. Panneerselvam, had not been doing anything for the people, Mr. Vijayakant said the AIADMK members were playing tricks before the people by putting up a sympathetic face. “Why do they go to temples praying for their leader’s [Jayalalithaa’s] release? The person had committed an offence and the court pronounced her guilty. As a citizen, we should respect the law of the land. There shall not be any sympathy from the people,” he said.

He said the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils crossed the mind of DMK president M. Karunanidhi only when he was out of power.
