Work on the construction of icon centre at Sri Tirunageswarar temple at Tirunageswararm has been completed.

It will be used for stocking a large number of idols, both stone and panchaloka ones.

According to Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the icon centre was aimed at ensuring proper safety to the icons belonging to ancient temples located in interior villages.

Uniform design

The model of the icon centre has been designed uniformly all through the State.

The availability of sprawling space all around the temple has come as a gift for the construction of the icon centre.

Apart from shifting the rare and precious idols from interior villages or from temples without adequate safety, the idols or icons which had been recovered by police will also be kept at the icon centre till the disposal of the cases. “The dimension of the icon centre has been assuming greater proportions,” the source said.

Inadequate safety

A decision to keep the icons in the centre pending the disposal of court cases had been taken in the wake of inadequate safety on the court premises.
