Huge haul of banned products in 2017

The police have seized 22,575 kg of banned tobacco products and 748 kg of ganja, worth over ₹2 crore, during searches conducted across the city in 2017.

According to a press release, the Chennai police had formed special teams under the leadership of respective station inspectors to crack down on the illegal sale of banned tobacco products such as mava, gutkha and narcotic substances like ganja.

Over 3,000 arrested

From January 1 till the end of December 2017, the teams raided various shops and godowns across the city.

A total of 3,039 cases were registered and 3,281 persons were arrested, the release said.

A total of 22,575 kg of banned tobacco products and 748 kg of ganja worth over ₹2 crore were seized.

Nine persons were also booked under the Goondas Act in connection with these crimes.
