A women’s hostel attached to the Government Arts College built by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at Poompuhar near here has been lying in disuse for the past three years, ever since it was taken over by the Department from the Public Works Department.
Constructed under the UGC funds, the hostel had all major infrastructure and was aimed at accommodating at least 75 students.
No takers
However, there have been no takers for the hostel, as the students hailed from nearby areas.
Hence, the HR and CE Department has planned to convert it into part of evening college.
“We have a large strength of 2,500 students – both regular and evening college streams put together. The plan to convert the hostel into evening college campus will reduce the congestion on the college campus,” an official told The Hindu on Sunday.
It has also been planned to extend the hostel with an additional block on the first floor so that additional classrooms can be accommodated on the hostel campus.
The department should effect some changes in the interior — shifting the design from the hostel rooms to class rooms, the source added.
Officials of the HR and CE would inspect the building shortly and take a decision on re-designing the structure.
