A host of water supply and sewerage projects, estimated to cost Rs. 853.96 crore, has been sanctioned by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
Among them is the project of extending the drinking water supply network for the Tirunelveli municipal corporation, at a cost of Rs. 230 crore and similar projects for the municipalities of Arni, Periyakulam, Thiruvathipuram and Tindivanam, all costing Rs. 117.69 crore.
While the Tirunelveli project will be funded under the German development bank, KfW, the other projects will be implemented under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns (UIDSMMT).
Feeder channelIn view of the proposed construction of a reservoir by combining tanks in Kannankottai and Thervaikandigai villages for storing one thousand million cubic feet, a feeder channel has been proposed from a tank in Thervaikandigai village to the Satyamurti Sagar in Poondi through the Kandaleru-Poondi canal.
An amount of Rs. 93.77 crore has been set apart under the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Programme and the formation of the channel would be implemented through Chennai Metrowater.
All these water supply projects would cost Rs. 441.46 crore.
The sewerage projects would be taken up in six municipalities — Periyakulam, Sattur, Mettur, Arakkonam, Tirupattur and Chidambaram — under the UIDSMMT. Their total cost would be Rs. 412.5 crore.
