Honour killing suspected in woman’s death

January 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:43 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

A 23-year-old postgraduate, B. Subashree, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Uchipuli, near here triggering speculation that it might be a case of ‘honour killing’.

The woman had married a 22-year-old man from her same backward class community. Police suspect foul play in the death as the woman’s parents were opposed to the marriage because her husband was a school dropout and a cab driver.

Police said Subashree fell in love with Prakash while working in Chennai and got married at a temple at Melmaruvathur on January 1.

However, she kept the marriage a secret after returning home.

It was under these circumstances, the woman was found dead at her house on Friday night. The Uchipuli police registered a case under Section 174 of the Cr.P.C. (suspicious death) and began investigation. Subashree’s parents and younger sister, working as a nurse in Madurai, were present at home when she died, police said.

Her father told the police that Subashree was upset after the marriage and had committed suicide by consuming poison.

She was found dead in the bathroom, he said. Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan said preliminary investigation revealed that there was suspicion in the death. “There are some struggle marks on the body and prima facie there is suspicion in the death,” he said. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) would probe the case after getting the post-mortem report.

The Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) started an inquiry on Saturday, he said.
