Hold talks to get share of Cauvery water: Vasan

The Tamil Nadu Government should hold talks with Karnataka to get its due share of the Cauvery waters as per the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal, said Union Minister of Shipping G. K. Vasan here on Monday.

The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee will urge the Centre to impress upon Karnataka to release water, he said, pointing out that the delta farmers could not take up kuruvai cultivation as the Mettur dam was not opened owing to poor storage.

Mr. Vasan was speaking at the birth anniversary celebrations of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Kumbakonam on Monday.

He said that Rajiv Gandhi played an important role in taking the country to 21 st century.

He sowed the seeds of the present revolution in telecommunication and information technology.

The United Progressive Alliance Government was taking forward the policies laid by Rajiv Gandhi and implementing schemes such as Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Health schemes for rural areas and Bharath Nirman scheme, Mr. Vasan added.
